Ramsar Bureau used "Fish for tomorrow?"as slogan for the 2007 World Wetlands Day
To commemorate the signing of the Ramsar Convention on 2nd February 1971 in the small town of Ramsar, Iran, 2nd February in every year is marked as the "World Wetlands Day". Different types of educational activities are organized worldwide to highlight the importance of wetlands, as well as to increase public's awareness of wetland conservation.
The main theme of the World Wetlands Day 2007 is "Wetland and Fisheries". To celebrate this important event, Hong Kong Wetland Park of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department organizes a series of activities, these include "Communicate Wetlands and People - Drawing and Painting our Wetlands" Competition, "My Favourite Scenic Wetlands – Wetlands and Fisheries Photo Competition and Workshops", "Wetlands and Fisheries Storytelling Competition", "Wetlands and Fisheries Website Design Competition" and the "7th Inter-school Bird Race".
The aim of the activities is to raise public awareness on conserving different types of wetlands such as mudflats, oyster beds, gei wai, fish ponds, mangroves and wet agricultural fields. We hope them to understand the importance of wetlands to fishery and aquaculture, and try to identify interesting species such as crabs, oysters, shrimps and fishes. We encourage public to explore for information through reading, drawing, and communicate through the internet to deliver conservation message.
