
World Wetlands Day 2008 Hong Kong Celebration Ceremony
A grand opening of the World Wetlands Day 2008 Hong Kong Celebration Ceremony was officiated by Miss Siu-hing Cheung, JP (Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation), Prof. Yuk-shan Wong (Chairman of Nature Conservation Subcommittee, Advisory Council on the Environment), Prof. Fung-yee Tam, Nora (Chairman of Country and Marine Parks Board), Mr Che-cheung Leung, MH (Chairman of Yuen Long District Council), and Mr Ling-hang Chan, Clement (Assistant District Officer of Yuen Long District Office), together with over 250 winners and guests, the ceremony had successfully conveyed the message of "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People".
In the ceremony, a total of 90 volunteers were awarded for their countless contribution of a total of 6,000 servicing days at Hong Kong Wetland Park in the year 2007. They have provided guided tour services for visitors to arouse public awareness on wetland conservation and participated in various wetland management activities.
Prizes were also presented to the winners who had joined various competitions from October 2007 till January 2008 co-organised by Hong Kong Wetland Park and a number of organisations including government departments, and NGOs. A total of 1,217 participants and 78 winners were selected in all activities held with the theme "Healthy Wetland, Healthy People", which is also the theme for World Wetlands Day 2008. Activities included the "Drawing for Wetland Conservation" Competition, "Wetlands in My Eyes" Writing Competition, "Vibrant Wetlands" Papercutting Workshops, "Wetland Model Creativity Day", the 8th "Inter-school Bird Race", and the 2nd Storytelling Competition - "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People".
At the end of the Ceremony, the winners of the storytelling competitions presented their stories and successfully delivered wetland conservation messages to everyone joining this ceremony.
On the same day, a Wetland Fun Fair was held in Hong Kong Wetland Park.
The Fun Fair was warmly supported by the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society,
Hong Kong Council of Early Childhood & Education Services, The Conservancy
Association, Tai Po Environmental Association, World Wide Fund For Nature
Hong Kong, College of International Education of the Hong Kong Baptist University,
Department of Biology of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
as well as The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. A number
of games and exhibits were organised for the public and encourage them to
aware of the importance of wetland conservation.
