In 1971, different countries have gathered in Ramsar, Iran to sign the "Ramsar Convention", an international treaty. The treaty has provided a foundation and basis for conserving wetlands of international importance, it also served as a blueprint for sustainable use of wetlands and their resources. Until October, 2009, Ramsar Convention has 159 contracting parties and 1867 Ramsar Sites, covering more than 183,000,000 hectares.
