The World Wetlands Day 2010 Hong Kong Celebration Ceremony was officiated by Mr. Chi-kong WONG, J.P. (Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation), Prof. Fung-yee TAM, Nora, J.P. (Chairman of Country and Marine Parks Board), Mr Che-cheung LEUNG, M.H., J.P. (Chairman of Yuen Long District Council), and Mr Tak-Keung YEUNG, J.P.(District Officer of Yuen Long District Office), together with over 250 awarded volunteers, winners and guests, under the wonderful songs performed by Q.E.S.O.S.A Tong Kwok Wa Secondary School choir. The ceremony had successfully conveyed the theme of World Wetlands Day 2010, "Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change".
In the ceremony, over 120 volunteers were awarded for their countless contribution of a total of 5,500 servicing days at Hong Kong Wetland Park in the year 2009. Besides, we also expressed our deep gratitude to communities and schools that have joined the "Community Volunteer Network", "Corporate Community Service Programme", and "School Partnership Programme". They raise public awareness on wetland conservation through providing guided interpretations, as well as actively participated in various wetland management activities.
To collaborate with the World Wetland Day 2010 Bird Watching Festival, Hong Kong Wetland Park and a number of organisations co-organised a series of activities from October 2009 to January 2010. They included "Birds and Wetlands" Painting for the Guinness World Records™, Black-faced Spoonbill Artwork Collection, Birds and Wetlands Art Gallery, the 10th Inter-school Bird Race, "Wetlands in My Eyes" Writing Competition, and the 4th Storytelling Competition - "The Wonder of Bird Migration". More than 5,000 people participated in these activities. At the meantime, prizes were presented to over 60 winners and 14 co-organisers of these competitions and activities.
After the Ceremony, the winners of the storytelling competition presented their stories on "The Wonder of Bird Migration". In the afternoon, an interactive drama "Upstream, Downstream: River of Time" was presented. Through these delightful stories and a series of exhibitions and activities, we wanted to convey the message on the importance of wetlands to birds.
We further introduce the main theme of World Wetlands Day 2010 through launching various activities which include guided tours, interpretations - "Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change", "Wetland and Climate Change" Drama - "Family Lost in the Wetlands", exhibitions on "Birds and Wetlands Art Gallery", "Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change", and winning entries of "Wetlands in My Eyes" Writing Competition. Through these activities, we want to arouse public awareness on wetland conservation and wise use of natural resources.
