"Birds and Wetlands" painting set a new World Record

Hong Kong Wetland Park has set a new Guinness World Record! On October 17, a total of 2,041 students and members of the general public gathered at the Wetland Reserve of Hong Kong Wetland Park to create a painting of 959.35-metre long and 1.2-meter width with the theme of "birds and wetlands". On October 30, it was confirmed by Guinness World Records that the attempt had set a new "longest painting by numbers" world record.

Part of the "Birds and Wetlands" painting is now displayed at the Entry Plaza of the Hong Kong Wetland Park. The Guinness World Records certificate and highlights of the activity are exhibited at the corridor of the Viewing Gallery. The exhibition aims to promote "World Wetlands Day 2010 - Bird Watching Festival" as well as to promote awareness of the global theme of World Wetlands Day 2010 "Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change".

Guinness World Records has set criteria for this "longest painting by numbers" activity - the canvas should be continuous; the width of the canvas should be at least 1 metre; the painting's theme should be consistent, painted by brushes and paint; the activity observed by at least two independent witnesses; as well as the measurement process and use of equipment should be conducted by accredited personnel.

The certificate awarded not only marked the contribution by over 2,000 participants for the promotion of "Birds and Wetlands" conservation, but also broke the previous world record of 599.94 metres set in Pune, India.

Next to the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, the park is one of the important stop-over sites for migratory birds. Every year, many migratory birds winter in Hong Kong from mid October to February, making it the best time for bird watching. To date, the park has recorded over 230 bird species, which accounts for almost 50% of bird species recorded in Hong Kong. In addition to seeing the exhibition and watching birds in the park, visitors can also participate in a variety of activities. These include the film show on "A Glimpse of Breeding Black-faced Spoonbill", collection of memory stamps for "Friends of Wetlands", taking a digital photo of birds and join the "Birds and Wetlands" Snap Shot activity. Students may also create artwork of Black-faced Spoonbill, as well as writing for the news reporting contest.

To celebrate the Bird Watching Festival, Hong Kong Wetland Park and MTR has jointly launched the "MTR-HKWP Triple Offer". One taking the MTR to Tin Shui Wai Station using Octopus Cards can get a coupon to enjoy 10% off Wetland Park admission ticket, "Light Rail/ MTR Bus 1-Day Travel Pass" and a limited edition bird pin.
